Free disk encryption software for PCs and PDAs
(PDA version of WWW site)

What is FreeOTFE?
FreeOTFE is a free, open source, "on-the-fly" transparent disk encryption program for PCs and PDAs

Using this software, you can create one or more "virtual disks" on your PC/PDA. These disks operate exactly like a normal disk, with the exception that anything written to one of them is transparently, and securely, encrypted before being stored on your computer's hard drive.

Features include:

  • Highly portable - Not only does FreeOTFE offer "portable mode", eliminating the need for it to be installed before use, it also offers FreeOTFE Explorer - a system which allows FreeOTFE volumes to be accessed not only without installing any software, but also on PCs where no administrator rights are available. This makes it ideal for use (for example) with USB flash drives, and when visiting Internet Cafés (AKA Cybercafés), where PCs are available for use, but only as a "standard" user.
  • Source code freely available
  • Easy to use; full wizard included for creating new volumes
  • Both PC and PDA versions are available; data encrypted on your PC can be read/written on your PDA, and vice versa
  • No need to install it; making it ideal for use on USB memory drives, etc
  • Available in English, Spanish, German, Italian, French, Czech and Japanese - with support for other language translations!
  • Optional support for smartcards and security tokens
  • It's powerful: Supporting numerous hash (including SHA-512, RIPEMD-320, Tiger) and encryption algorithms (including AES, Twofish and Serpent) in several modes (CBC, LRW and XTS) - providing a much greater level of flexibility than a number of other (including commercial!) OTFE systems
  • Encrypted volumes may either be file, partition, or even disk based
  • Much more!

v3.40 of FreeOTFE Explorer is now available for download.

This new version improves performance, and makes the user interface a lot more user friendly when carrying out copy/move/store/extract operations by adding the standard MS Windows progress dialogs, adds overwrite functionality, Czech and Japanese translations - and more!

FreeOTFE Explorer v3.40 is also available in both U3 and portableapps.com packages - as well as standard installer and ZIP archive releases - providing better integration with these two systems and making it even easier to take with you!

Please see the Version history for more details on what's changed!

FreeOTFE v5.10 and FreeOTFE4PDA v5.10 released (13th October 2009)
v5.10 of the PC version of FreeOTFE, and v5.10 of the PDA version (FreeOTFE4PDA) are now available for download

For the PC, various options have been added, including the ability to set FreeOTFE to start automatically when Windows starts, and a handful of other usability options such as allowing the user to define what action is to be carried out when single/doubleclicking the system tray icon.

The PC version of FreeOTFE is also available in both U3 and portableapps.com packages - as well as standard installer and ZIP archive releases - providing better integration with these two systems for those who have and use them.

The PDA version sees less changes, mainly to correct a packaging issue with the previous release's translation files, caused by a fault in the Microsoft packaging tool.

Both versions also now feature Czech and Japanese language translations.

To read more about the specifics of what's new, please check the Version history.
